How Electricity Reaches Us

Power stations are built to generate electricity.

The diagram shows the four main stages:

  1. the fuel is burned to boil water to make steam
  2. the steam makes a turbine spin
  3. the spinning turbine turns a generator which produces electricity
  4. the electricity goes to the transformers to produce the correct voltage

Electricity Distribution

Thomas Edison built the first electricity distribution system in the U.S. in 1882.

Electricity flows by the movement of electrons through conductors, mainly copper wires, taking the path of least resistence to an area of lower voltage.
